Bethlehem Steel Plant. Bethlehem, PA. 2012
An extremely long train of a building with distinct architectural events along the way: saddlebags, chutes, stair towers, mechanical duct-work, cantilevered saddlebags, etc. The frame-and-panel wall structure marches along relentlessly with an alternating roof monitor that gives the building a low crenelated profile. The infill material varies from safety glass, painted red safety glass, and translucent polycarbonate. Unfolded corners like open books create a grand unintentional public plaza, while the rare small blue man-door with a low metal awning serve to remind one of the human scale.
Those smokestacks reminded me of White Bay Power Station in Sydney. Completely abandoned at the moment and supposedly filled with asbestos but there is a plan to possibly open it up to visitors. Image from here.
